Why am I overweight? Part 1
Why am I overweight? Many people thing they know the answer to this question, but the answer is not as simple as it seems. Do I just eat too much food? Do I just need to workout more? Should I cut carbs? Are unlucky genetics dooming me to be overweight no matter what I do? The answer is a complicated one and varies from person to person. Despite the difficulty of the question, it is one that needs to be answered to have any lasting success with weight loss.
This is a question I have wrestled with in one way or another most of my life. Watching film and TV it would seem that we are overweight because we can't stop stuffing our faces. We have no self control, we are told and eat mountains of food. However, this does not match my experience. Growing up I would compare my meals to my classmates meals at lunch time. I did not eat more and often ate less than they did. I remember in college a friend who ate constantly complaining that he could not gain weight. I had no sympathy. My food selections did not seem to be much different from my classmate's either. When my junior high sold donuts before school to raise money, I made a point never to buy one, but I would see skinny kids buying them every day. I was never very athletic, so maybe that was it. However, I met skinny people who were out of shape as well. What is it?
Before I actively sought the answer to this question, I tried many times to loss weight. From exercise programs, to slim fast to counting calories, to weight watchers nothing kept the weight off for long. It was not until I realized that to change my body, I first had to understand how it worked. The battle had to begin in my mind.
Over this series, I plan to delve into some of the things I have learned in this process. I am excited to share my journey of self discovery with you.
